The complexion of the Cleveland Browns’ offence will be dramatically different for Sunday’s pivotal encounter with the host New England Patriots. Odell Beckham Jr. is out of Cleveland after being given his release, and the Browns might also be without Nick Chubb after the star running back tested positive for COVID-19. His absence would represent a huge break for the Patriots, who carry a three-game winning streak into this one.

New England is a 2.5-point favourite to win on the NFL odds, with a total of 45.0.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

The hook in favour of the Browns could result in plenty of action on the host Patriots – but it hasn’t happened yet, with 53 per cent of Sports Interaction bettors siding with the visitors. That trend might shift if/when Chubb is officially ruled out – especially if you weigh in the fact that the Browns have gone just 2-6 against the spread in their last eight visits to Gillette Stadium. The Patriots are on a 4-2 ATS streak overall, though they’ve won just one of their last five home games.

The trend on the totals side is slightly more definitive, with 64 per cent of the SIA audience opting for the O45 at -110. There’s little separating these teams from a totals perspective: Cleveland is 5-4 O/U while averaging nearly 25 points per game, and the Patriots are 4-5 O/U with a scoring average of 25.6 ppg. New England has, however, gone 4-1 to the Over in its past five games, and these teams have surpassed the number in four of their past six meetings.

Cleveland Browns

The Beckham Era in Cleveland ends in much the same way his tenure with the New York Giants did: With a whimper. The former star receiver finished with 1,586 receiving yards and just seven touchdowns in 29 games with the Browns, failing to appear in a single playoff game over that span. And while his catch rate of 54.3 per cent lags far behind the 62.7 per cent mark he logged with the Giants, shoddy quarterback play can be attributed to at least part of that.

New England Patriots

The Patriots missed out on a shot to land Beckham, who reportedly opted to join the Los Angeles Rams. And while his best days might already be behind him, his presence would have almost certainly boosted a New England pass attack that ranks in the middle of the pack league-wide at 238.8 yards per game. Jakobi Meyers paces the team in receptions (46) and yards (434) but is still looking for the first receiving touchdown of his career.
