A lot has been written, justifiably so, about Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin’s long road to recovery. He suffered a cardiac arrest on January 2 in the midst of a football game. Since then, his rehabilitation has impressed and, critically, been swift enough for him to be back on the Bills’ roster. That said, he likely won’t play in Monday night’s game away to the New York Jets.

Bills’ Safety Damar Hamlin Out of Week 1 Game vs. Jets

To put the news into context, his expected absence from the action on Monday night has less to do with the status of his health and more with where he stands in the pecking order. Hamlin is listed as a backup to safety Micah Hyde. The latter was listed as questionable all week long but was an active participant in the Bills’ most recent training sessions and is set to take the field at MetLife Stadium on Monday.

In fact, Hamlin’s significant playing time in 2022 (13 games) had to do with a critical neck injury suffered by Hyde.

Given that, one can argue that Buffalo is heading into battle with the superior player, although Von Miller’s absence looms large on this big divisional battle.
