49ers Trade QB Trey Lance to Dallas Cowboys

The Kyle Shanahan (head coach) and John Lynch (general manager) regime has known a lot of success, despite still not earning a Super Bowl ring. It often feels like one of the smoothest operations in the NFL, with very little for people to criticize. Maybe Trey Lance’s 49ers career could be consider one such blotch.

Lance wasn’t merely drafted by the franchise in 2021. Lynch and company sent three first-round picks to the Miami Dolphins to slot themselves higher in the draft order just to select Lance.

His first season was spent predominantly backing up the also departed Jimmy Garoppolo (now with the Las Vegas Raiders). In 2022, Shanahan deemed him fit to be the team’s number one QB, but he broke his ankle in a Week 2 game against the Seattle Seahawks, thus sending Garoppolo back into action. That is, until desperate times saw the emergence of current starter Brock Purdy.

This past offseason, all eyes were on the backup quarterback fight between Lance and Sam Darnold. By all accounts the latter impressed the coaching staff more, leaving the 49ers with not many options for their would-be future QB.

Lance will now contend with Cooper Rush in Dallas to see who backs up Dak Prescott.
