Say goodbye to Kansas City’s dynasty

The Chiefs were one of the surprise losers in Week 1, dropping a 27-21 decision against the division-rival Chargers in Sao Paulo, Brazil, which snapped a seven-game win streak in head-to-head action.

It’s not necessarily the loss that is concerning, but how the loss came about. Kansas City was thoroughly outplayed, with sloppy mistakes and questionable decision making throughout the game.

In short, it was a bit shocking to see how unprepared an Andy Reid-coached team looked.

So, after seven straight trips to the AFC title game and three Super Bowl victories, is the Patrick Mahomes-led KC dynasty finished?

That’s a bit of an…overreaction. See, what we did there?

Count the Chiefs out at your own peril. This is a veteran team that knows how to do just enough to stay healthy heading into the playoffs when they really step it up a notch.

Remember, Kansas City was playing without the suspended Rashee Rice on Friday and losing Xavier Worthy early because of a shoulder injury really put a wrench in the offensive plan.

Mistakes early in the season can be corrected, so I need to see this team fully implode before I write their death certificate.

Bryce Young is officially a bust

Heading into this year, there was a lot of hype for Bryce Young after the 2023 first overall draft pick’s great play near the end of last season.

Unfortunately, Young took that hype and threw it in the trash with a 26-10 Week 1 loss to the lowly Jaguars. Jacksonville’s defence is mediocre at best and Young still only managed to complete 18 of 35 passes for 154 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

Young is already considered undersized for a quarterback at 5’10” and just over 200 pounds, so there will always be questions about his ability to lead an offence.

But, is it time to bench Young and replace him with Andy Dalton for a second straight year?

Not yet. Young was far from the only player who struggled in the season-opener.

Week 1 games are always messy and there’s still a lot of growth we can expect from the 24-year-old. Carolina would be better suited to throwing Young right back on the field and letting him work through his own issues.

However, there’s no question this is a pivotal year. If Young can’t at least show some flashes of his potential, the Panthers will likely target a new QB in next year’s draft.

Giants should bench Wilson for Dart

If the New York Giants thought veteran quarterback Russell Wilson was the missing piece, they look sorely mistake.

Wilson struggled in New York’s 21-6 loss in Washington, completing 17 of 37 passes for 168 yards with no TDs or interceptions. Only Malik Nabers and Wan’Dale Robinson had more than two receptions.

Understandably, that has led to calls for rookie Jaxson Dart, drafted 26th overall out of Ole Miss, to get the reins of this offence.

Let’s pump the brakes on this. We’re talking about replacing a 10-time Pro Bowler and former Super Bowl champion with a rookie who wasn’t even drafted in the top half of the first round.

New York’s schedule is daunting over the next five weeks, with matchups against the Cowboys, Chiefs and twice against the Eagles. That’s not a recipe for success for a rookie pivot.

The best plan of action for the Giants is to run with the veteran for the first part of the season before reevaluating.

Axe Miami’s McDaniel

The Miami Dolphins were blown out 33-8 in Indianapolis to start the year and the seat is only growing hotter under head coach Mike McDaniel.

McDaniel’s leash was already short heading into the season and Miami’s Week 1 performance doesn’t help. The Dolphins didn’t look like they had any plan on either side of the ball and there’s a clear lack of chemistry or direction for the team.

That all falls on the head coach, so is it time to make the switch from McDaniel?

The problem with firing McDaniel is the roster won’t change. The offence is built around Tua Tagovailoa, so regardless of who runs the team, they won’t have success if Tagovailoa puts up another 114-yard passing peformance.

It’s too early to fire McDaniel, but he’s in real danger of losing his job before the season is over.
