The runway for Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders is a little longer as he will remain the starter for the rest of the season, head coach Kevin Stefanski said on Monday.

Shedeur Sanders

Selected 144th overall in this year’s draft, Sanders is coming off his best game of the season, throwing for 364 yards with three touchdowns and one interception in a 31-29 loss against the Tennessee Titans.

He also rushed for 29 yards and a TD, becoming the first Browns quarterback to have at least three passing TDs and a rushing TD in the same game since Derek Anderson in 2007.

Sanders started the year far back on the depth chart, but Joe Flacco’s trade to Cincinnati and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel’s injury opened the door for the son of Hall of Famer Deion Sanders.

In three starts this season, Sanders has thrown for 769 yards with five TDs and three interceptions, completing 52.4 per cent of his passes.

Cleveland Browns

Stefanski also announced that starting centre Ethan Pocic tore his Achilles and he will miss the rest of the season.

Pocic, 30, was injured against Tennessee on the first play of the fourth quarter. He was carted off the field and later ruled out for the rest of the game.

It’s the latest blow to Cleveland’s injury riddled offensive line, which has lost three starting offensive linemen over the last two games. In addition to Pocic, right tackle Jack Conklin was out Sunday because of a concussion, while right guard Wyatt Teller was out with a calf injury.

Teller will miss Cleveland’s Week 15 trip to Chicago, according to Stefanski.

The Browns also lost starting tackle Dawand Jones to an LCL tear in his knee and a hamstring injury in Week 3.

Cleveland will use their ninth different starting offensive line combination of the season on Sunday, with Luke Wypler replacing Pocic.

The 3-8 Browns are heavy 7.5-point underdogs against the 9-4 Bears this week as Chicago looks to fight off 9-3-1 Green Bay in the race for the NFC North division.
