The second round of the NFL Draft takes place Friday night. There’s a chance that Canadian Chase Claypool will be a second-round choice, and you can wager on that possibility now on our NFL odds page.
Chase Claypool 2020 NFL Draft Odds
Notre Dame standout receiver Chase Claypool could be one of the major pieces to fall in this weekend’s NFL Draft.
The native of Abbotsford, BC has a chance to become the highest Canadian born widout since Jerome Pathon was selected by the Indianapolis Colts in the 2nd round (32nd overall) in 1998.
Claypool was the Fighting Irish’s top receiver and MVP in 2019 with 66 receptions for 1037 yards and 13 touchdowns. The six-foot-four, 238 pounder caught 150 receptions for 2159 yards and 19 majors in his time at South Bend. The Irish had success moving him all over the field, similar to what the San Francisco 49ers do with Deebo Samuel. Here’s a breakdown from one NFL scout, “He’s a vertical challenger outside, a possession receiver as a big slot, an outstanding run blocker and immediate coverage ace on special teams. His elite traits and diverse skill set could allow him to create a unique footprint as a pro.”
Currently the Sports Interaction lines management team has him ranked at the 55.5 position. However, as part of our NFL draft prop specials there is a wide variety of positions that you can wager on where Claypool will land; round 2, picks 60,61, 62 are the favourites paying +120.
Lots of raw athletic ability is another way of describing Claypool’s talents. Notre Dame Head Coach Brian Kelly didn’t even watch him play football before recruiting him to Notre Dame. It was at a high school basketball game where Claypool dropped 51 points in the game and showed a “will to win”.
Claypool has speed to burn as he dropped a 4.42 second 40-yard dash time at the NFL combine. He joined former Detroit Lion star and future Hall of Famer Calvin Johnson as they only two receivers measuring six foot four and 235 pounds or bigger to run under 4.45 seconds at the event. “Those are extraordinary numbers,” say ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr., “they’re historically great numbers for a kid his size. He had a second-round grade, at worst an early third.”
NFL prediction: Under 55.5 draft position; Claypool is chosen No. 48 by the New York Jets. The Jets need to complement to the free agent signing of Breshad Perriman and reliable slot receiver Jamison Crowder. Claypool is a big, physical target that can move around in different positions making him a great fit with Sam Darnold.
