Stanford NCAAB Tournament Preview 2008
Could it be a Westside story of NCAA odds defying proportions for Stanford?
The last time Stanford were NCAA Champions, FDR was President and Betty Grable’s legs were insured for one million dollars. It’s unlikely that Stanford will add to its 1942 title this year, but in Final Four betting, it might be a mistake to cut the Cardinal down prematurely.
The reason that the school named for a tree is doing so well this year is the presence of two brothers could very easily be mistaken for trees. Brook and Robin Lopez are two seven foot twins on whom the Cardinal is building its Tourney campaign, Brook racking up the scores while Robin defends the inside the way Horatius defended the bridge all those years ago. An early season loss at Siena left Stanford languishing for a long time but the Lopez brothers are dragging them right back into contention. A good run in the Pac-10 Tourney could give the Cardinal some momentum, and once sails are filled, who knows where a voyage ends?
