Oddsmakers have the Toronto Raptors as huge favourites to beat the Indiana Pacers in the first round of the NBA Playoffs.

Last year, the Toronto Raptors’ playoff run was over before it could even get started. After a 49-win season, the Raptors season ended with a whimper as they were swept by the Washington Wizards in four games. This year, Toronto expects to win this series or there will be serious consequences in the offseason.

Toronto Raptors

This is gut-check time for the Raps. Last year they were embarrassed in the first round and vowed to come back with a tougher, playoff-ready squad. They certainly look the part. Toronto ranked fifth in the NBA in total offence and 11^th in total defence, so this is a team that’s capable winning games in a number of different ways. Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan have an edge now that they didn’t have before and Toronto’s bench provides the depth and toughness that you need this time of year. The Raps went 32-9 at home this year and won all four of their meetings with the Pacers this season, covering the spread in three of those victories.

Indiana Pacers

The Pacers know the book on the Raptors – clog the lane, force outside jumpers and keep Lowry and DeRozan off the line. Defence is what will keep Indiana close in this series but the Pacers will have a tough time matching Toronto’s firepower. Paul George averages better than 23 points per game but he’s dealing with a wonky ankle and Indiana’s next best scoring option is Monta Ellis, who averaged 13.8 per game. The Pacers did finish the year on a good run for their supporters by covering the number in six of their last seven games.

NBA Playoffs Prediction

Unless the Pacers are able to hold Toronto under 100, it’s going to be tough sledding for Indiana. The Air Canada Centre is becoming an extremely tough place to play. If the Raptors get the first two games of the series at home, they now have the type of team in place to end this series quickly. Pacers bettors may see some underdog value early on, but Toronto is the strong team from top to bottom.
