With six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter and the New Orleans Pelicans holding a 17-point lead over the Golden State Warriors, it looked as if the Pelicans would grab their first win in the series against the no. 1 seed Warriors. They didn’t.

The Pelicans outplayed the Warriors for the first 42 minutes of the game, with Anthony Davis fueling a 16-0 run in the second quarter that would build a double digit lead that would last until the fourth quarter. The remaining six minutes were a completely different story as league MVP candidate Steph Curry caught fire and brought the Warriors back to win 123-119 in over time.

It started with a little run and Golden State chipping away at New Orleans lead little by little. For as good as Davis was in the first three periods, he seemed to disappear in the fourth, leaving Curry to run wild. He finished with 40 points on 10 of 29 shooting from the field and sank seven three pointers. One of those three pointers tied the game at 108, forcing extra minutes.

A lack of quality offensive possessions, poor rebounding and missed free-throws doomed the Pelicans during the six minute collapse. It allowed the Warriors to get within striking distance and take control of the game unexpectedly. The rest is history, as the Warriors would go on to complete the amazing comeback, taking a 3-0 series lead in the first round of the playoffs.

The season is likely over for the Pelicans, but they have plenty to look forward to. Anthony Davis finished this game with 29 points and willed New Orleans to the playoffs on the back of his superb play in the home stretch of the regular season. While the Warriors, who are +175 to win the Championship , will likely advance this year, New Orleans fans can look forward to Davis continuing his ascent from star to one of the best players in the league.
