Can the Toronto Raptors shock the NBA world and finally make a deep run into the playoffs this season?

The Toronto Raptors have big expectations again this season as they prepare for the opening of the NBA season.

The Toronto Raptors are looking to take their recent success to another level this year and the National Basketball Association’s early odds suggest they’ll be in a position to turn some heads again this year.

Toronto Raptors NBA Odds

The Raptors’ regular season win over/under currently sits at 47.5, which is down slightly from last year’s total of 48.5, but their odds of making the NBA playoffs are a whopping -1000. Toronto is also set at -400 to win the Atlantic Division for the second consecutive season.
Last year, the Raptors cruised through the first half of the season, but then stumbled down the stretch before bowing out in the first round of the playoffs to the Washington Wizards in a four-game sweep.

If there’s one area Toronto hopes to shore up this year, it’s on the defensive end of the floor. Last year the Raptors allowed more than 100 points per game.

“We’re going to be better defensively,” Raptors coach Dwane Casey told reporters at the beginning of training camp. “We may not score a point. I don’t now want everybody yelling and screaming, ‘Oh they can’t score. They don’t have offence.’ In all seriousness, we want to have a balance.”

And if Casey has it his way, that balance begins with defence first.

“Hopefully our defence will score some points for us,” Casey added. “I don’t predict we’ll be in the top-four again in offence. We’ll probably be somewhere in the middle of the pack. And that will be to my liking.”

NBA Championship Odds

That makes a lot of sense when you look at Toronto’s major additions in the offseason. Adding DeMarre Carroll, Bismack Biyombo and Cory Joseph instantly make the Raptors a tougher team to play against at both ends of the floor and that’s something the Raptors are stressing this year. Last year they had a reputation of a soft team on defence and one that depended on one-on-one isolations on offence. This year they’re vowing to grind teams down and share the ball.

Of course, that’s all lip service until we see it on the court. The Raptors NBA championship odds are set at +3300.
