There was no shortage of bad news for the Suns by the end of Game 2 in Denver. They lost 97-87, they’re down 2-0 to the best team in the Western Conference, and Chris Paul had to leave the game due to injury. His status as of Wednesday morning is listed as day-to-day.

The action heads over to Arizona for two tilts. The NBA odds deem Phoenix as a -3.5 favourite for the third match, whereas the total is tabulated at 224.5

With the circumstances being what they are, it’s not surprising that Denver’s chances of winning the series are on the upswing. Mike Malone’s Nuggets sit at -455 on the series board to extinguish the Suns – previously -167. Conversely, the latter is pegged at +302 compared to +124 heading into the second contest. Still, not disastrous figures, primarily because Phoenix has Kevin Durant and Devin Booker.

Monty Williams’ crew was an excellent home side all season, finishing 28-13. They’ll need some home cooking to get back into this series, otherwise, it will be over a lot sooner than most expected. On the flip side, despite being the number one seed in the conference, Denver was far from spectacular away from home, going only 19-22. They only managed a split in Minnesota in the previous round, and it goes without saying the Phoenix is a considerably more dangerous unit.

Denver has covered the spread in the first two games of the series, whereas the over and under have split earnings.

Now is not the time to get complacent. There were little signs of that in the first playoff series against the Timberwolves, but they reared their heads once Nikola Jokic and company had a 3-0 stranglehold. A wounded animal is often the most dangerous kind, and a Suns team with two superstars down 2-0 should, in theory, make for a terrific battle in Game 3.

A lot of positive comments came out of the second bout in Denver and for good reason. It was a close contest until the home team pulled away in the final period, winning it 27-14. What can reassure Nuggets faithful is that their side found ways to win despite that Jamal Murray had his worst game of the playoffs so far, finishing with 10 points off 3-for-15 shooting. Not one would argue that the Joker had been “quiet” in the playoffs, but his Game 2 numbers outshone those of Game 1, with 39 points and 16 boards. He has grotesquely outplayed Deandre Ayton through two games. The secret sauce on Monday was Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, who went 4-for-4 from distance, most of those hits coming in the fourth quarter.

Phoenix Suns

It’s time to put up or shut up. There will be no coming back from a 3-0 hole against the Denver Nuggets, so a win Friday night at home is imperative.

In an ironic twist – perhaps a bitter one for Suns fans to swallow – one of the biggest reasons why Phoenix should win game 3 is because it’s a bounce-back opportunity for KD. He was brought to the desert to come up big in moments like Game 2 but only went 10-for-27. Granted, 24 points are by no means bad, but nor is it what’s expected from a player of his calibre in a dire playoff situation. With Chris Paul possibly out, he’ll have to be the scoring genius we know him to be. Four points from the bench is another issue. No team is winning a playoff game, let alone a series, with those numbers. Torrey Craig and Cameron Payne must step up.
