Marcus Smart to Grizzles, Kristaps Porzingis to Celtics
As the offseason kicks into high gear and a different sort of gamesmanship is played between franchises, the Boston Celtics, Washington Wizards, and Memphis Grizzlies have agreed to a three-way trade involving some big names and picks.
Take a look at our NBA Futures for ton of draft action and our WNBA odds.
Grizzlies Get Smart, Celtics Get Porzingis
The Marcus Smart era is Boston is over. After a number of deep postseason runs, including an NBA Finals appearance in 2022 and a Defensive Player of the Year honour in 2022, the gritty guard is heading to the Memphis Grizzlies.
The Washington Wizards receive a few pieces from both the Celtics and the Grizzlies. Danilo Gallinari and Mike Muscala, who spent last season in Boston, are now members of the Wizards, as is Tyus Jones, who backed up Ja Morant as point guard in Memphis and frequently proved his value. A 2023 second-round pick (35th) also comes their way.
As for the Boston Celtics, they acquire forward-centre Kristaps Porzingis, a 2023 first-round pick (25th) and a 2024 first-round pick.
Given Al Horford’s more limited play time these days – he partook in 63 games during the regular season – and Robert Williams III’s nagging injury concerns, it was obvious Boston needed another option in the paint. The Wizards get two dependable back up players who can shoot when asked to.
One can argue that the Grizzlies benefit from a “less is more” standpoint. They only get one piece, Marcus Smart, but it’s the most alluring of the bunch. Together with Desmond Bane and Ja Morant – assuming that after his 25-game suspension his 2023-2024 goes normally – the Grizzlies could have a fantastic starting five next season.
