The Lakers’ current slide includes the first two games of their current five-game road trip, capped by Friday night’s crushing 130-108 loss in Boston. The Pistons return to action after falling just short in a 105-102 loss to Golden State that marks the team’s fifth defeat in six home contests.

L.A. is a 7-point favourite to win on the NBA odds, with a total of 210.5.

The Lakers have enjoyed the support of 57 per cent of bets placed on Sunday night’s matchup at Little Caesars Arena, but have dipped slightly since opening as 7.5-point favourites. With the OVER attracting 88 per cent of bets, the total has made gains since opening at 209, climbing to its current position at 210.5.

Sunday evening’s matchup marks the first meeting of the season between these two teams. The two sides split a pair of games last season, extending a trend that has seen the home team earn the outright win in eight straight clashes. In addition to posting five straight home victories over the Lakers, Detroit has also covered the spread in eight of their past 10 dates with LA, including a 107-92 win as a 7-point home underdog, back in January. That bodes poorly for the Lakers, who currently sport a league-worst 6-11 record against the spread, and have covered just once in six outings while favoured by at least 3.5 points.

While their most recent clash needed two overtimes before ending as a 135-129 Lakers win, previous meetings between these teams have otherwise been low scoring. The OVER paid out in nine of their previous 12 dates, with the total finishing at or below 208 in their previous three.

Questions linger over the health status of LeBron James, who returned to action in Friday’s loss to the Celtics after missing seven games due to an abdominal injury. James enjoyed a productive return on Friday, contributing 23 points and six rebounds, but remains listed as questionable on Sunday. Still smarting from a thigh contusion reportedly suffered in a collision with Giannis Antetokounmpo during Wednesday’s 109-102 loss in Milwaukee, Anthony Davis’ status for Sunday has been upgraded to probable. Davis showed no ill effects of the injury while draining a team-high 31 points in Friday’s loss, and will be aiming to crack 30 points for the ninth time in 11 appearances against the Pistons.

Detroit Pistons

Trailing by as many as 14 points in the fourth quarter, the Pistons’ comeback bid fell just short in Friday’s loss to the Warriors. The defeat dumped Detroit’s record to a dismal 4-11. The club has shown signs of overcoming a horrific 1-8 start by posting outright wins in three of their past six outings. The Pistons have also rewarded sports bettors by covering in four of seven overall, and four of five when pegged as underdogs by at least 6.5 points. However, the club ranks dead last in the NBA with 98.5 points scored per game, and have been limited to fewer than 100 points in four of their past six home games.
