NBA: Brooklyn Nets at Los Angeles Lakers

With L.A. in need of a pick-me-up, the city rivalry will be renewed on Sunday when the Los Angeles Lakers take on the Clippers at the Intuit Dome.

The steps required for the L.A. Clippers to no longer be seen as the Lakers’ “little brother” go beyond moving into their home, but it’s a start. Sunday is the first time these city rivals will play at the Clippers’ newly christened, state-of-the-art arena. In fact, it’s their first meeting of the 2024-25 campaign. Both won most recently, the Clippers on Thursday at the Portland Trail Blazers (118-89), and the Lakers on Friday at home over the Brooklyn Nets (102-101).

Lakers vs. Clippers NBA Betting Odds

As stated, Sunday’s contest is a fresh start in this rivalry insofar as these franchises will butt heads at the Intuit Dome for the first time ever, and have yet to duel this season. Up until recently, the Clippers rode an extraordinary 11-game winning streak over the Lakers. That ended in November 2023 and since then the Lake Show has captured three of four.

The boys in purple and gold are banged up these days. Anthony Davis is day-to-day (foot), Christian Wood is out (knee), as is Jarred Vanderbilt (foot), and Dorian Finney-Smith was away from the team (personal) on Friday. Coupled with all the emotional and psychological duress incurred by the natural disaster from last week, kudos to the Lakers for winning twice in a row. As for what betters are looking for, they may not be enamoured by the 19-20-0 tally against the spread. The Lakers also haven’t covered three of the past four.

The Clippers also had a game postponed recently, but they bounced back with a string of three wins, two of which were at the Dome. They’re healthier than their opposite number, with only Kawhi Leonard listed as day-to-day (rest), which probably won’t surprise anybody. Of the two Los Angeles squads, this is the one that betters can rest their faith in more given the decent 24-15-1 ATS record. The Clippers have handled five of their last six spreads.

Los Angeles Lakers

A familiar face strutted into Cryot.com Arena on Friday as DeAngelo Russell and the Nets visited the Lakers. Incidentally, not only was he recently traded away by the Lakers for the second time, it’s also his second stint with Brooklyn.

It would be L.A. who got the last laugh, albeit barely, what with their former brother in arms missing a three-point shot in the dying seconds of a 102-101 match. The hosts played a hard-nosed, scrappy game for much of the night, netting less than 30 points in three of the four periods, and ironically lost the quarter in which they did hit that mark (the fourth). Austin Reaves had a career-best 38 points and came alive in the fourth. LeBron James wasn’t took far behind with 29 points, and Jaxson Hayes did his best AD impersonation with nine rebounds.

Truth be told, the Lakers look okay at 22-17 and sixth in the West, just a few games out of fourth place.

Los Angeles Clippers

On Thursday, the Clippers escaped the unfortunate drama unfolding in L.A. for a quick trip up north and a game versus the Trail Blazers devoid of any drama whatsoever.

The 118-89 win was a walk in the Oregon woods for the Clippers, who never trailed and, at one stage, led by as many as 34 points. It helps when a club attempts as relatively few shots as they did (78) and hits 56. 4 per cent of them. Portland lagged far, far behind with 37.4 per cent efficiency. A little bit of everyone was involved Thursday. Norman Powell led with 23 points, followed by James Harden’s 19, Terance Mann’s 14, Derrick Jones Jr’s 13, and Amir Coffey’s 10.

There’s still plenty of basketball to be played, but with the Lakers in sixth place and the Clippers in fifth, this match might hold greater importance down the road than the average mid-January bout.
