Jaylen Brown, drafted by the Boston Celtics in 2016, has just signed the single-most lucrative deal ever seen in the National Basketball Association. The contract is for five seasons worth $304 million.

Most people were aware that Brown has been a critical component of the franchise’s relative success over the past few seasons. Clearly, Brad Stevens and the rest of the front office believed so too. Money talks.

Jaylen Brown Signs Supermax with Boston Celtics

It’s been an interesting past 12 months for Jaylen Brown. There were reports during the 2022 offseason that Boston was studying the possibility of trading the player. When that never came to pass, pundits were quick to question how Brown would react, specifically on the court.

As it turned out, 2022-2023 was his best season yet. In 67 regular-season games, many of which were played with a facial protection mask, he averaged 26.6 points, besting his 24.7 from 2020-2021. In fact, he hasn’t averaged fewer than 20.3 in the past four years. He’s also corralled at least six boards a night in each of the past four campaigns.

The 26-year-old’s postseason numbers shouldn’t be ignored either. He put up 21.8 during the 2019-2020 run to the bubble Eastern Conference Finals, 23.1 en route to a 2021-2022 NBA Finals appearance, and 22.7 last year.

Brown and Jayson Tatum are considered one of the top duos in the entire NBA. The trifecta of them and Marcus Smart has been dismantled, what with Smart being traded to the Memphis Grizzlies earlier this summer. That surely allowed the Boston brass to dig a bit deeper into their treasure chest and offer Jaylen Brown as much as possible. Tatum is in the final year of his rookie contract.
