Golden State Warriors
The Warriors became just the 10th team in NBA history to come back from a 3-1 series deficit after they defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder on Monday night, 88-96. The series-ending game seven was settled after a flurry of three-pointers that has fueled them over the course of the long season. The -200 favored Warriors averaged 14.4 three-pointers per game, good for the playoff’s best 43.4 shooting percentage form behind the arc after finishing the regular season tied for seventh in three-point shooting percentage. The winner of the NBA Finals may not be decided by three-pointers alone, but Golden State’s attempt to repeat against the same Cleveland team they defeated last year can’t afford to lose their touch now.
Cleveland Cavaliers
After losing to the Warriors in last years NBA Finals, the +162 underdog Cleveland Caveliers have once again earned the right at a second crack at Golden State to avenge last season. LeBron James will be playing in his sixth consecutive NBA Finals, his third with Cleveland overall. With Kevin Love and Kyrie Irving finally healthy and having more time to learn to play together, James will have a better supporting cast. The Cavs success will depend on LeBron’s ability to get his teammates involved, exploiting mismatches on offense and knowing when to take over the game for himself. The Cavs have to be hungry for this repeat match-up after losing to the same team last year. The Warriors could be in for a surprise if they think they’re facing the same team that led to their first Championship in 40 years.
Golden State Warriors vs. Cleveland Cavaliers Prediction
The injury-depleted Cavs pushed the Warriors to game six in last year’s Finals without Love and Irving in the line-up. Cleveland will need to play smart and have their best defensive effort against Golden State. If they’re crazy enough to engage the Warriors in a three-point contest, however, their efforts will be for naught. Steph Curry and Klay Thompson are the best shooting backcourt in the league and Lebron & Co. would be wise in sticking to a more disciplined approach to matching scoring efforts.
Pick: Golden State Warriors in six games.
