NBA: Milwaukee Bucks at Philadelphia 76ers

A wounded Philadelphia 76ers squad takes the trek up to Canada for a tilt with the Toronto Raptors Friday night, with both clubs seeking their first win of this young NBA season.

Down Joel Embiid and Paul George to knee injuries, Philadelphia started their season off on a predictably bad note by losing by double digits to Milwaukee on Wednesday. Toronto had a predictable season-opening result too, when Cleveland came in on Wednesday and went off for 136 points in a 30-point victory. Toronto’s season win total of 28.5 may be too high; Friday’s result versus this 76ers team will at least provide a more clear indication on whether the Raptors can even compete.

Tip-off at Scotiabank Arena gets going at 7 p.m. EDT with the 76ers a 4.5-point favourite on the road and the total at 219.5 on the NBA odds.

76ers vs. Raptors NBA Betting Odds

Without Embiid and George the 76ers are bound to take a hit on offence, hence the total still hovering below 220 despite Philadelphia finishing last season nearly scoring 115 points per game. And speaking about finishing last season, let’s make a reminder that the Raptors won three of their final 24 contests a season ago. Toronto’s not supposed to turn that around anytime soon too — their NBA title odds have six digits, for example.

The underdog role wasn’t suited well for the Raptors either as last season they finished 5-18 against the spread as a home underdog. Philadelphia went 22-19 outright on the road last season and 12-7 as a road favourite.

Philadelphia 76ers

Tyrese Maxey is going to need to be a superstar in order to hold down the fort for Philadelphia until Joel Embiid and Paul George get healthy. Maxey’s 25 points in the 76ers season-opening loss clearly isn’t good enough, especially when he’s supposed to be Philly’s top scorer and proceeds to go 10-for-31 from the field. Kelly Oubre Jr. chipped in with 21 points but didn’t shoot overly well either. In fact, the 76ers starting five went a combined 24-for-66 shooting.

With Embiid out in the season-opener, veteran centre Andre Drummond got the start in his first game back with Philadelphia and hit a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Drummond is 21 double-doubles shy of 500 — a number he could reach this season if the 76ers bigs continue their injury woes.

Toronto Raptors

The one positive for the Raptors is that in Wednesday’s blowout defeat, their youngsters played some heavy minutes and the rookies got some lengthy NBA debuts. A couple of 2024 second-round picks, Jamal Shead and Ulrich Chomche, both played double-digits off the bench, which was also in part to first-round pick Ja’Kobe Walter (shoulder) still injured. Walter won’t play Friday either.

Gradey Dick was Toronto’s only starter to finish above 13 points on Wednesday, which says everything you need to know about where the Raptors offence will be at in 2024–25. R.J. Barrett (shoulder) is doubtful to make his season debut Friday so it’ll once again be up to the starting cast of Dick, Immanuel Quickley, and Scottie Barnes to produce offensively — meaning don’t get your hopes up.
