NASCAR Odds & Predictions: Darlington 400
Darlington marks the return of NASCAR for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic stopped competition. This will be the first race since March 8 at the Fan Shield 500 at Phoenix Raceway. Joey Logano picked up his second win of the season edging out Kevin Harvick.
Similar to what the UFC did in Jacksonville, Florida, NASCAR is limiting personnel who will have access to the South Carolina facility and have put safety protocols in place. Team members will undergo screening and equipment unloading.
Racing Analysis
Sunday’s race at Darlington will mark the 116th Cup race hosted by the speedway in the series’ history. The 1.33 mile oval has an asphalt racing surface with 25 degrees of banking in turns 1 and 2 and 23 degrees of banking in turns 3 and 4. Darlington hosts a number of NASCAR events. Last year Erik Jones (Toyota) won the Bojangles’ Southern 500. He’s a value bet currently at Sports Interaction, paying +1400 to win the race.
Interesting enough there will not be any practice runs for qualifying laps prior to Sunday’s race, so it is wide open to say the least. Kyle Busch is the favourite at Sports Interaction to win the event paying +500, followed by Kevin Harwick at +650 who won a Darlington in 2014. Two-time Darlington winner Denny Hamlin is also listed at +650. He also won earlier this season at the Daytona 500.
Jimmie Johnson is in his final year of NASCAR and he will be the sentimental favourite at a lot of raceways this season. Johnson won at Darlington but it was way back in 2004 at the Mountain Dew Southern 500 and Carolina Dodge Dealers 400. Johnson is a legend in the sport and his 83 wins tie him with Cale Yarborough for sixth-place for all-time wins. He’s a big-time longshot in this race paying +2500
Prediction
Chase Elliott is third in points this season with 144 only 20 behind Harvick and 19 behind Lagano. He is number one in Driver’s Rating with a mark of 110.4, leads all drivers in fastest laps (119) and second in quality passes this season (408) just behind Lagano. He is also tops of all NASCAR drivers with most laps led this season with 186. Hendrick Motorsports has an excellent history at this track. The team has the most wins of any NASCAR team at Darlington with 11 in total and Elliott is a big part of that company.
Chase Elliott is my selection paying a very respectable +1000 to win at Darlington.
