Kevin Harvick, 2020

Points leader and last week’s winner Kevin Harvick enters the race as one of the favourites paying +550 to win the event. He’s finished in the top five position in three out of four races this 2020 season.

The Coca-Cola 600 marks the second NASCAR series race since the Covid-19 pandemic stopped competition. Last weekend in Darlington, South Carolina at The Real Heroes 400, Kevin Harvick claimed his first checkered flag of the 2020 season edging out Alex Bowman. Harvick started from the number six position and led for 159 laps out of 293 for his 50th career win.

Racing Analysis

Sunday’s race at the Charlotte Motor Speedway will be the 61st running of the event. The Concord, North Carolina track will be 400 laps (600 miles, 965.606km) in length. The defending champion is Martin Truex Jr. Currently at Sports Interaction he is one of the favourites paying +550 to repeat.

Points leader and last week’s winner Kevin Harvick enters the race as the second favourite paying +550 to win the event. He’s finished in the top five position in three out of four races this 2020 season. Kyle Busch is the favourite currently at +400.

Another driver to watch is Alex Bowman in the Hendrick Motorsports number 88 car. Bowman already has a win this season (NASCAR Cup Series Race in California) and last week finished second to Harvick for his second top five finish of the season. He is registered at pretty good value currently paying +1600 to win.

Jimmie Johnson is in his final year of NASCAR and will always be the sentimental favourite at a lot of raceways this season. He’s looking for a big rebound this week after last week where he bowed out of the race on the final lap of stage one. Johnson is a three-time winner of this event winning it for three straight years between 2003-2005 but is a long shot to win on Sunday paying +1600. Back in the 2017 race, he appeared to have another Coca-Cola title in his bag but his car ran out of fuel with less than two laps to go. Johnson is a legend in the sport and his 83 wins tie him with Cale Yarborough for sixth-place for all-time wins.

Prediction

Martin Truex Jr. is looking for his first win of the 2020 season. This will be Truex Jr’s 16th start at the Coca-Cola 600 and to say he’s on a roll at this Charlotte track is an understatement. Truex Jr. is a two-time champion of this event winning it in 2016 and 2019. In fact, during his 2016 win he recorded the fastest ever average speed recorded at the event going 160.655 mph. The Mayetta, New Jersey native has had a dismal season ranked 11th on the NASCAR 2020 standings with zero top five finishes but now is the time to jump back into the competition. He is coming off a positive race last week finishing sixth at Darlington.

Interesting note to this race, four of the last five winners have driven a Toyota to victory circle, and the past two Coca-Cola 600 winners have been from Joe Gibbs Racing team. Truex Jr. fits both of these criteria.

My selection is Martin Truex Jr. to win the Coca-Cola 600 at +550.
