It’s going to be a big night for UFC fans in Saskatchewan, as UFC Fight Night 74 rolls into Saskatoon this Sunday at the SaskTel Centre. TSN has the Canadian broadcasting rights for the event, which will start at 6 p.m. eastern for the early prelim fights, with the main card events beginning at 9PM eastern time. Let’s take a closer look at the six fights on the main card.
Strawweight: Maryna Moroz vs. Valerie Letourneau
Moroz made a splash in her first UFC fight when she defeated Joanne Calderwood in 90 seconds. She is now 6-0-0 and has made it very public that she wants to take on the current champ, Joanna Jedrzejczyk, as soon as possible. Before she gets her shot at the title, she will have to go through Valerie Letourneau. Letourneau is 6-3-0, and is the underdog in this fight, with current odds showing her at +165.
Prediction: Moroz by Submission
Lightweight: Oliver Aubin-Mercier vs. Tony Sims
Sports Interaction’s oddsmakers have Canadian fighter Aubin-Mercier as the odds on favorite at -280 to take this lightweight fight against the 12-2-0 Tony Sims. Although Aubin-Mercier is the less experienced fighter, he’s coming off of two submission wins, which may give him the momentum he needs against the taller, more experienced Sims.
Prediction: Aubin Mercier by Decision
Lightweight: Chad Laprise vs. Francisco Trinaldo
Chad Laprise, who is 11-0-0 in his UFC career, is heavily favored to win this fight, with odds showing him as the -435 favorite. Francisco Trinaldo is coming to this fight with a decent-looking record at 17-4-0, but his critics say that he’s earned that record against fighters who were not even close to being his match. That is not the case with this pairing, so look for this one to go the Canadian winner of Ultimate Fighter Nations, Chad Laprise.
Prediction: Laprise by Decision
Welterweight: Patrick Cote vs. Josh Burkman
Patrick Cote is beloved in Canada, and he loves to put on a great show for his Canadian fans. Josh Burkman needs a win, and has a lot to prove, so we can expect a decent battle between these two veterans. Cote is the underdog of this fight, at +115, and he has a 21-9-0 record since his UFC career started. Burkman, 28-12-0, is slightly favored at -145.
Prediction: Cote by Decision
Welterweight: Neil Magny vs. Erick Silva
American fighter Neil Magny is currently the #15 ranked Welterweight in the UFC. His 15-5-0 record, as well as his boxing prowess, have made him a worthy opponent to take on the odds favorite, Brazilian fighter Erick Silva. Silva, whose record in the UFC is 18-5-0. brings a smorgasbord of talents into the Octagon, and will do his best to win the fight quickly against Magny, who has lost by submission in most of his losses. We currently have Erick Silva as the -200 favorite to win this fight.
Prediction: Silva by Submission
Featherweight: Max Holloway vs. Charles Oliveira
The main event fight at Fight Night 74 will be a showdown between a grappler and a striker. Holloway, 13-3-0, will be using his striking power to try and get a quick win against Oliveira, who is 20-40-0, and oddsmakers believe in his methods, placing him as the -290 odds favorite to take this fight. That said, Oliveira is coming off of four wins in a row, and could very well be the underdog winner of the night, despite the current +210 odds on that happening.
Prediction: Holloway by KO/TKO
