UFC Odds, Prediction: Katlyn Chookagian vs. Antonina Shevchenko
The final bout of the prelims at UFC Fight Night on Saturday from Las Vegas is an excellent matchup between ranked women’s flyweights as Katlyn Chookagian battles Antonina Shevchenko. This bout likely will start around 8:30 p.m. ET, and here are the Sports Interaction UFC odds.
Valentina Shevchenko is the current women’s flyweight champion with Chookagian ranked second and Antonina Shevchenko 12th. She is the older sister of Valentina, so here’s guessing they never fight. This bout in all honesty is a better matchup than the lone women’s fight on the main card featuring unranked strawweights in Mackenzie Dern and Hannah Cifers. Shevchenko is a -160 favourite on the UFC odds board with Chookagian at +125.
The 35-year-old Shevchenko (8-1) is from Kyrgyzstan, part of the former Soviet Union. She is very well-known in the Muay Thai community and was a long-time fighter in that discipline/kickboxing. She made her MMA debut in 2002 and won her first three bouts before taking a 12-year hiatus until 2017.
“Pantera” earned a UFC contract with a second-round TKO (knees) win over Jaimelene Nievera at “Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series” in June 2018. Shevchenko is 2-1 in the UFC, last in the Octagon in August 2019 and beating Lucie Pudilova by second-round technical submission (rear-naked choke). Five of Shevchenko’s seven wins are by decision and her one loss that way. Shevchenko, a southpaw, averages 4.90 significant strikes per minute (absorbs 1.92) and 0.67 takedowns per 15. Her fight time average is 11:11.
UFC on ESPN 9 Odds: Chookagian vs. Shevchenko
Chookagian (13-3), 31, is from New Jersey. Her MMA debut came in June 2014 and her first UFC fight was a unanimous decision win over Lauren Murphy in July 2016. “Blonde Fighter” will have the unique opportunity of fighting the Shevchenko sisters back-to-back. She lost a title fight to Valentina in February by third-round TKO (elbows and punches) in a one-sided, bloody affair. It was the first time in Chookagian’s career she was stopped inside the distance.
When Chookagian wins, it’s usually by decision (77 per cent) but rarely by submission (eight per cent). Two of her three defeats are by decision. Chookagian’s fight time average is 14:34. She lands 4.11 significant strikes per minute (absorbs 4.49) and zero takedowns per 15 with a takedown defence of 50 per cent. Clearly, Chookagian is much more comfortable standing up.
UFC Fight Night Predictions: Chookagian vs. Shevchenko
The over/under for rounds (scheduled for three) is 2.5, with the over a massive -625 favourite. Think Valentina will give Antonina some advice on how to win this bout? Antonina wins by decision.
