Claudia Gadelha will be in the spotlight on Saturday night as the sixth-ranked strawweight against Angela Hill. This will be Hill’s third fight in 2020.
One women’s fight on the main card of UFC Fight Night 172 from Jacksonville, Fla., on Saturday and ranked Claudia Gadelha looks to inch closer to a title shot in the strawweight division with a victory over unranked Angela Hill.
Gadelha ranks sixth in the division and 14th on the pound-for-pound list. Hill is unranked. “Claudinha” is a 31-year-old from Brazil – now lives in Las Vegas — who is 17-4 in her professional MMA career, which began in July 2008. The second-degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has fought in numerous organizations and made her UFC debut in December 2014 with a split decision loss to former champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk. Gadelha got a shot at the strawweight belt in a rematch with Jedrzejczyk in July 2016 but lost via unanimous decision in “the Ultimate Fighter 23” finale.
Gadelha also has lost to Jessica Andrade (current No. 1 ranked strawweight) and Nina Ansaroff (No. 5). All four of Gadelha’s losses are by decision. Meanwhile, eight of her wins are via the judges with seven by submission. Her fastest pro victory was in 17 seconds in her pro debut. Gadelha averages 3.17 significant strikes landed per minute in UFC fights and 3.34 takedowns per 15 minutes. Gadelha is a -190 favourite on Saturday’s UFC odds board with Hill at +150.

Hill, 35, is an American with a 12-7 record. Her pro debut was an April 2014 second-round TKO win (knees) over Stephanie Skinner, and Hill’s UFC debut was later that year, a unanimous decision victory over Emily Kagan in “the Ultimate Fighter 20” finale.
Hill is one of the busiest fighters, men or women, in the UFC and on a handful of occasions has taken short-notice bouts. This will be her seventh Octagon appearance in less than 14 months and her third fight already this year. “Overkill” comes off a short-notice fight, beating Konklak Suphisara by unanimous decision in February. It was Hill’s third win in a row.
Seven of Hill’s wins are by decision and none by submission. Five of her seven losses are via the judges and two by submission. Hill lands 5.74 significant strikes per minute but also absorbs 5.13. She averages just 0.50 takedowns per 15 minutes.
There is talk that if Gadelha wins, she will get a rematch with inaugural UFC strawweight champion Carla Esparza. She beat Michelle Waterson via split decision at UFC 249 last Saturday and lost to Gadelha at UFC 225 by split decision.
