UFC: Dana White wants Georges St-Pierre vs. Anderson Silva
If Georges St-Pierre wants to fight Anderson Silva, all UFC owner Dana White says he has to do is ask. GSP, who defended his title against Nick Diaz last month, has been rumored to face Johny Hendricks next but White obviously understands the appeal for a possible GSP-Silva bout.
“I am literally going to call Georges St-Pierre today,” White told reporters Thursday, ahead of this weekend’s UFC on Fox 7 event. “We’ll see what he wants to do. I’m just feeling him out. I’m calling him up saying, ‘So, you’ve had a long time off. You had a vacation. What’s up? What are you thinking about?’ I want to see what he says. If Georges says to me, ‘I want to fight Anderson Silva’, you think I’m going to go, ‘No you’re not, you’re fighting Johny Hendricks’?”
Uh, no. And if St-Pierre is going to fight Silva at some point, you have to think it’s coming sooner rather than later. GSP’s trainer recently said the Montreal native may only have a few fights left before he retires. St-Pierre is also branching out to try his hand in acting recently and will make his silver screen debut in the next Captain America film.
Before we get too far ahead of ourselves, Silva still has to face Chris Weidman at UFC 162 in July and this could be a significant test for Silva, who is 16-0 in his UFC career. Weidman is 9-0 in his UFC career. Johny Hendricks’ time is coming as well – he’s 15-1 and will be getting a title shot soon.
Still, the fact of the matter is that if GSP is on the backstretch of his career, he’d be crazy not to consider fighting Silva now. First off, the payday would be lucrative and a win over Spider would silence his critics. The big question here is how the weight differential would be handled. GSP looks great at 170, but moving up might be a lot to ask. Another snag could be the rumored Anderson Silva-Jon Jones fight. There is some talk that those two could square off in a 20th anniversary bout held at Madison Square Garden.
