Why the New York Mets and Yankees Are Having Terrible Seasons

There are no two ways about it, neither the Mets nor the Yankees have looked good this year. The Bronx Bombers are currently 60-66, losers of nine consecutive games at the time of writing and an incredible 17 games out of first place in the AL East.

The Mets are a woeful 58-68, 23 games behind the NL-leading Atlanta Braves, and haven’t a prayer’s hope of returning to the postseason this year.

What in the world is going on in New York? Why is the Big Apple so rotten? John Gibbons offers some insight.

“I guess it just goes to show that money can’t buy success. The thing about those two teams and the market they’re in is that it won’t last. They’ll go into a rebuild and reload.”

Gibbons reminds viewers that any team can have a bad year like that of the Yankees and Mets. Injuries and preseason plans going awry didn’t help either.

“With the Yankees, Aaron Judge was down a while. Giancarlo Stanton’s been hurt a lot, Josh Donaldson’s been hurt a lot. With the Mets, Justin Verlander didn’t start the season right and Max Scherzer struggled.”

The former Blue Jays head coach suggests that maybe some fans don’t mind seeing the New York sides struggle, given that both are big money teams. As he astutely puts it, their issues might not be good for baseball, but they’re certainly good for rival franchises and fanbases.
