The NL East-leading Atlanta Braves come to Toronto this weekend for a three-game series starting on Friday, May 12. Atlanta has proven to be quite a threat to opponents so far this season. What makes them so special?
As always, we invite you to check out the American League odds, National League odd, interleague odds, and various props for all your MLB action.
Atlanta Braves Are a World Series Favourite
As David Bastl points out in the final segment, the Georgia-based ensemble opened the campaign as about +550 favourites to win it all in 2023. John Gibbons explains why he believes that to be the case.
“They’re so balanced and have a ton of good, young players. They’re much like the Blue Jays. There are a lot of similarities between those two teams.”
“Gibby” emphasizes the importance of being a balanced ball club, which he believes the Braves most certainly are. If there is perhaps a lingering doubt surrounding their chances, it might concern the pitching. Charlie Morton is starting to get up there in age – he’ll turn 40 this autumn – and the bullpen’s main closer, Raisel Iglesias, has had a few rough nights on the mound.
As for how they’ll perform in the postseason, assuming they get in, Gibbons acknowledges that it’s always incredibly difficult to predict. He likens the unpredictability of MLB playoffs to what’s happened so far in this spring’s Stanley Cup playoffs.
“It’s kind of like these Florida Panthers, you know? Who would have thunk it? Well, maybe I shouldn’t say that but, you know…(trails off for comic effect)”*
*At the time of writing the Florida Panthers lead the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-0 in the second round.
