Blue Jays’ Davis Schneider’s Impressive Stint
Credit to the Toronto Blue Jays for remaining in the hunt for a postseason berth. Several of their stars have missed significant playtime in recent weeks. In fact, some still are. But that’s what minor league affiliated clubs are for, fostering reinforcements that can hold the fort during rough stretches. The Blue Jays have called up plenty. As David Bastl asks, which ones could be a part of Toronto’s lineup next season?
John Gibbons shares his assessment of the new faces.
“If you think about it, those are key injuries. But the guys who have come up have done really well. You start with Davis Schneider. He’s been dynamite since he got here. Spencer Horwitz has had a big year down there from Triple-A. Ernie Clement’s done a nice job.”
To the former manager’s point, Davis Schneider has put up some beguiling numbers at the plate in a very limited time span. He’s participated in 20 matches at the time of writing. In 68 visits to the plate, he’s earned 25 hits, brought in 19 runs, and hit 7 HRs. His average of .385 is sensational. He does strike out a lot (22), but otherwise, his hitting has played a huge role in Toronto’s ability to remain competitive down the stretch.
“Gibby” elaborates.
“They’re just those grinder types, hard-nosed. Those three guys (Schneider, Horwitz, Clement) could be hockey players if they knew how to skate.”
As to which of the new faces has done enough at the plate and on the diamond to be back, Gibbons is unequivocal.
“Gosh, if Schneider isn’t on that team…I would say he’s earned it. You can bet on him, I would think.”
The Toronto Blue Jays wrapped up a three-game series in Oakland versus the Athletics, taking two of three. Next up is a weekend series at home to the Kansas City Royals, starting Friday night.
