Toronto Blue Jays Trade for Cardinals’ Reliever Genesis Cabrera

With the August 1 MLB trade deadline approaching, it was expected clubs like the Toronto Blue Jays and St. Louis Cardinals would engage in transactions. Toronto is in the midst of a Wild Card hunt and St. Louis is looking to rebuild as a disappointing season oozes along.

Relief pitcher Genesis Cabrera is heading to Toronto and in return, the Cardinals are sent catching prospect Sammy Hernandez.

Genesis Cabrera Joins Blue Jays Bullpen

John Schneider and the coaching staff are hoping that a change of scenery will do the Dominican Republican pitcher some good. 2023 has been rough for him. In 32.0 innings pitched his ERA has ballooned to 5.06. He’s also on pace to give up more earned runs than in seasons past, having coughed up 18 already.

2020 and 2021 were much better seasons, and if he can rekindle the spark that produced those stronger campaigns, he’d help out a Blue Jays bullpen that already has some good players like Jordan Romano and Trevor Richards.

The Blue Jays – 54-43 and third in the AL East – open a weekend series away to the Seattle Mariners on Friday.
