Toronto Blue Jays Trade for Cardinals Pitcher Jordan Hicks

It was very recently that St. Louis Cardinals’ pitcher Genesis Cabrera made his way to Ontario to bolster the Toronto Blue Jays’ bullpen. He’s even partaken in a couple of games since being traded. He now has a familiar teammate in Jordan Hicks, whom the Blue Jays acquired in exchange for a couple of Double-A pitchers.

Blue Jays Acquire Closer Jordan Hicks from Cardinals

Word has it that the deal was a reaction to Jordan Romano’s injury. The stud closer is suffering from lower back injuries. He didn’t look great on Friday night against the Los Angeles Angels and has since been placed on 15-day injury list. Any doubts regarding Romano’s health and long-term durability had to be managed.

Enter Jordan Hicks.

The former Cardinals shut-down pitcher sports a 3.67 ERA and 59 strikeouts in 41.2 innings of work so far in 2023.

Reports are that the Blue Jays are excited about his 100.5 mph sinker and his 60 per cent groundball percentage, an extremely important stat when managing those late innings. Only 26 years old, he has more than enough great years ahead of him should he remain healthy – he underwent Tommy John surgery in 2019 – and he fit into Toronto’s plans well enough.

He joins Romano, Erik Swanson, and Yimi Garcia as the club’s group of closing pitchers.

The Toronto Blue Jays open a four-game home series against AL East rivals the Baltimore Orioles.
