It wasn’t so long ago that co-hosts John Gibbons and David Bastl talked about how the Blue Jays managed the rotation with only four starters. Now with Alek Manoah back and Hyun-jin Ryu seemingly improving in triple-A, could Toronto suddenly have too many in rotation?

Toronto Blue Jays Starting Rotation Dilemma

As David Bastl points out, Hyun-jin Ryu, who was sent down to the minors, has shown promising signs. He may be back to his old self before long, meaning the Blue Jays would call him up.

On paper that sounds good, except for the fact that it would mean the club has six starters: Kevin Gausman, Chris Bassitt, Jose Berrios, Alek Manoah, Yusei Kikuchi, and Ryu. Typically teams like to have five. What would this mean for the Jays?

“Gibby” shares his thoughts.

“I think that’s too many. These guys all function on their routine. I don’t know what they’re going to do. Actually, it would be almost ideal if Gausman is out for a couple of weeks.”

A reminder to readers that Kevin Gausman did not start this past Saturday’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks due to discomfort in his left side. There is no set timetable for his return. He is listed as Day-to-Day, although it’s reported he will skip the Padres series as well.

The former Blue Jays manager throws out what he believes is a bold idea.

“Maybe they trade somebody. It might be kind of crazy but it’s an option too.”

The MLB trade deadline of August 1 looms, and given the stable of quality Blue Jays starters, the idea might not be as wild as Gibbons makes it out to be.
