Toronto Blue Jays’ Max Scherzer set to make triple-A start on Wednesday

After a brief pause in his rehab assignment, Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Max Scherzer is scheduled to make another start for the triple-A Buffalo Bisons on Wednesday.

Blue Jays manager John Schneider told reporters on Monday that Scherzer will start for the club’s triple-A affilliate on Wednesday and he expects the veteran will need to make multiple rehab appearances before returning to the majors.

Scherzer missed a scheduled start in the Florida Complex League after receiving three cortisone injections in his thumb during the all-star break.

The 41-year-old right-hander last pitched for Buffalo on July 8. He also appeared with high-A Vancouver on July 3 as he works his way back from back spasms.

In his last start with the Bisons, Scherzer allowed five runs and six hits with five strikeouts across four innings. He hasn’t pitched for Toronto since June 10 when he allowed five runs and five hits with four strikeouts while lasting just 3.1 innings in a 7-4 loss against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Multiple injuries have limited Scherzer to six starts and only 22 innings with the Blue Jays this season. He has a 10.23 ERA, 14 strikeouts and 11 walks in that stretch.

Scherzer was also sidelined from April 24 to June 10 because of right forearm tendinitis and left ankle inflammation.

After coming up short in extra innings in Game 7 of the World Series last year, it has been a very disappointing season for the Jays. As of Tuesday, Toronto is dead last in the AL East with a 46-54 record.

Despite those struggles, the Blue Jays are still alive in the playoff picture because of the largely struggling American League. Toronto is 5.5 games out of the final AL wild-card spot and the next week will likely determine what they do ahead of the Aug. 3 trade deadline.

The Blue Jays are currently +450 to make the playoffs and -600 to miss out.
