Blue Jays Remove Paul DeJong from 40-Man Roster

As David Bastl brings up in this segment of Pitch Clock, Paul DeJong is already no longer a Blue Jay after only a few weeks. The shortstop who was brought in in a flash when Bo Bichette got injured was designated for assignment (DFA). Earlier this week, the San Francisco Giants picked him up. In 13 game with the Blue Jays he had hit a woeful .068.

Bastl asks John Gibbons whether the Toronto Blue Jays gave him a fair shot at staying with the club.

“I think they absolutely made the right decision. It’s all about winning right now. He got some at-bats and is an established big leaguer and a steady shortstop. He’s put up some good offensive numbers over the years, but it’s also tough you get placed in a new spot. It puts extra pressure on you.”

“Gibby” elaborates that the Blue Jays may have found another solution to whatever potential shortstop hiccups may rear their heads. Santiago Espinal can play the position should Bichette be out of commission or simply given a day off.

DeJong’s Blue Jays career was brief, but Gibbons remains confident that Toronto is equipped to weather the storm of a playoff push without him.
