With Shane Bieber in line to make his Blue Jays debut on Friday, Toronto will have a six-man rotation. The Blue Jays’ plan is to have Bieber start on Friday, Jose Berrios start on Saturday and Kevin Gausman start on Sunday. The other Blue Jays starters are Chris Bassitt and Max Scherzer.
Toronto manager John Schneider said Lauer’s move to the bullpen is not permanent. It’s believed the Blue Jays’ plan for the rotation could change week-to-week.
“It’s going to be a fluid situation,” said Schneider. “For that series he’ll [Lauer] be available out of the pen. It definitely doesn’t take him out of starting contention going forward.”
After spending last season in the KBO, Lauer is having a resurgent year in Toronto. In 14 starts, Lauer has an 8-2 record with a 2.76 ERA.
Sending Lauer to the bullpen opens the door for Bieber’s season debut. The former Cy Young winner hasn’t pitched in the majors since April 2024 when he was a member of the Cleveland Guardians before undergoing Tommy John surgery.
