MLB Odds: Detroit Tigers vs. Seattle Mariners ALDS series preview and prediction

Following a first-round bye, the second-seeded Seattle Mariners will begin their postseason campaign in the ALDS against the Detroit Tigers. Seattle used a second-half surge to overcome the Houston Astros and secure the American League West title with a 90-72 record.

Detroit collapsed down the stretch and settled for a wild-card berth at 87-75 before beating the AL Central champion Cleveland Guardians 2-1 in the Wild Card Series.

The Mariners have been the far superior team lately, but the Tigers cannot be discounted with Tarik Skubal at the top of their rotation. Even though these are not big-market franchises, this should be a fascinating best-of-five set.

Detroit Tigers vs. Seattle Mariners MLB ALDS Series Odds and Betting Trends

Seattle is a significant -170 favourite to win the series, which is no surprise given that this team played very well down the stretch of the regular season and has home-field advantage. However, this is just the franchise’s second playoff appearance since 2001. The Mariners last participated in the postseason in 2022, when they won a wild-card game against the Toronto Blue Jays before getting swept by the Houston Astros 3-0 in the ALDS.

Detroit finds itself in the ALDS for a second consecutive year. In 2024, the Tigers swept Houston 2-0 in a Wild Card Series before losing to Cleveland 3-2.

Detroit Tigers

It’s in the past now, but you can’t tell the story of the 2025 Tigers without mentioning what transpired during the regular season. They led the Guardians by 15.5 games at one stage and still held an 11-game cushion as recently as September 5. Detroit went on an eight-game losing streak and dropped 13 of its last 16 contests, allowing Cleveland to take the division lead.

Nonetheless, manager A.J. Hinch’s club erased the demons by winning Game 3 at Cleveland 6-3 on Thursday afternoon. Despite requiring three games to advance, the Tigers’ pitching rotation is set up well for the start of the ALDS on Saturday in Seattle. Skubal will likely pitch on four days of rest in Game 2 on Sunday and could then go again on four days of rest in Game 5 next Friday if the series goes the distance.

Seattle Mariners

No matter what happens the rest of the way, Seattle’s year will be remembered at least in part for what Cal Raleigh did during the regular season. The switch-hitting catcher blasted 60 home runs to go along with 125 RBIs and 110 runs scored. He is expected to finish second in AL MVP voting behind a heavily favoured Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees.

There are a couple of injury question marks for the Mariners. Starter Bryan Woo has not pitched since September 19 due to a pectoral issue. First baseman Josh Naylor (groin) and right fielder Victor Robles (shoulder) are listed as day-to-day.

MLB Prediction: Who Will Win Detroit Tigers vs. Seattle Mariners?

Although the Tigers advanced well out of round one, there is no denying that they were simply awful at the end of the regular season. They also just battled through three tough games against the Guardians, whereas Seattle is entirely well rested.

The Mariners are the better team on paper, and that is how it should play out on the field, although they will want to finish the job in Detroit before possibly having to face Skubal in Game 5. Let’s go with Seattle in four games.
