Blue Jays Pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu Injures Knee, Leaves Game vs Guardians

With a sweep of the Red Sox under their belt, the Toronto Blue Jays entered Cleveland on Monday night with starter Hyun-Jin Ryu on the mound. The Korea native was making his second start of the season after Tommy John surgery last year. Unfortunately, a freak incident forced him to leave the game in the fourth inning.

Blue Jays Pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu Injured Again

Hyun-Jin Ryu can’t catch a break. After missing over a year of MLB action, he was forced to leave Monday night’s contest against the Cleveland Guardians because of a nasty injury on his right knee. It’s being reported that Ryu has a knee contusion.

The incident occurred in the bottom of the fourth inning of a 0-0 game when batter Oscar Gonzalez made contact, sending the ball straight back at Ryu and smashing into the latter’s right knee. Remarkably, Ryu still made the play at first base to get Gonzalez out, but immediately collapsed to the ground once Vladimir Guerrero Jr. caught the throw.

The Blue Jays went on the win the contest 3-1, the first of a four-game set in Ohio. Even so, the series starts off with a dark cloud over it for Toronto. For now, Hyun-Jin Ryu is listed as Day-to-Day but that could quickly change. The Jays are also dealing with absences from Kevin Kiermaier, Bo Bichette and Jordan Romano.

Toronto and Cleveland resume their set on Tuesday. Yusei Kikuchi will throw for the Blue Jays. Tanner Bibee will defend home soil for the Guardians.
