With injuries piling up in recent weeks, the Toronto Blue Jays have given 24-year-old second baseman Davis Schneider the opportunity to prove his worth. Has he ever! Co-hosts John Gibbons and David Bastl discuss his qualities as a player and who he reminds Gibby of.

Davis Schneider’s Importance to the Blue Jays

At the time of writing, Schneider has played in seven contests for the Toronto Blue Jays, both at bat and at second base. His statistics speak for themselves. In 25 visits to the plate, he’s earned 10 hits, smacked two home runs, and driven in five runs total, translating to a .400 batting average. Incredible stuff for a player few had heard of before the weekend of August 4-6 when the Jays visited Boston to play the Red Sox.

Who does Davis Schneider remind former Toronto manager John Gibbons of?

“It’s a great story. He was thinking of hanging it up a few years ago. I know Jeff Kent is a name that people are talking about. He’s just up there grinding, just hacking. Bill Mazeroski, the old time players, you know? Honus Wagner.”

To be fair, he has cooled off considerably since that terrific series versus the Red Sox. Such is often the case with players who come out of seemingly nowhere and start off hot. No one has data on them or any tape to study. He went hitless in three games in Cleveland and last played on Saturday at home against the Cubs when he went 1-for-3 with a walk. Even so, the Blue Jays know they have a decent player waiting in the wings should his name be called up in case of an emergency.
