Blue Jays’ Bo Bichette and Matt Chapman Listed Day-to-Day

Sunday’s series closer versus the Cleveland Guardians didn’t go according to script at all for the Toronto Blue Jays. For one, the Guardians clipped them 10-7 in 11 innings. Second, the final score meant the visitors took the weekend series 2-1. Last but certainly not least, both shortstop Bo Bichette and third baseman Matt Chapman left the contest in the sixth inning because of injuries.

Bo Bichette and Matt Chapman Injured in Loss to Guardians

The last fans saw of Bichette was in the bottom of the fifth inning when the All-Star calibre players grounded out to first base. His run was difficult. It was revealed post-match that the shortstop suffered right quad tightness. Santiago Espinal filled in for him.

As for Chapman also got banged up on Sunday, suffering right middle finger inflammation. Astute Blue Jays followers may recall that he recently experienced a similar issue whilst working in the weight lift room. That caused him to miss some time on the diamond.

As of Monday morning, both players are listed as day-to-day.

The one bit of solace in all of this is that Toronto hosts a three-game set against the Washington Nationals (61-70) starting on Monday. Washington is not lighting it up this year, so maybe the Jays can survive a game or two without their two stars. Then again, the Nationals have captured six of their previous nine games, winning each series 2-1. Check out our series preview.

Toronto sits third in the AL East at 71-60. More importantly, the club is two and a half games back of a Wild Spot. They currently chase the Texas Rangers, Houston Astros, and Tampa Bay Rays.
