Orioles’ Felix Bautista Placed on a 15-Day IL
As summarized in Saturday’s story, Felix Bautista exited Friday’s match versus the Colorado Rockies in the bottom of the ninth inning. With Baltimore leading 5-4, Bautista took to the mound to do what he does best. He got the first two outs, but when throwing a fastball to the final batter, Bautista came off the mound awkwardly, as if slipping. In truth, it was the moment his arm suffered a UCL.
It’s well known that such a problem can require Tommy John surgery, although for now, it doesn’t appear as if that will be necessary.
Bautista has earned 33 saves this season, making him one of the best closers in the majors. His absence, even if it is only for two weeks, puts the Orioles in a bit of a pickle. He is far and away the pitcher they rely on the most to secure wins late in games.
The club will now depend on Yennier Cano, Danny Coulombe, and DL Hall to fill some very big shoes.
Baltimore is 81-48 and holds a three-game lead over the Tampa Bay Rays (79-52) in the division.
