Bo Bichette

Bichette will be starting at second base for the second time in this series and the second time in his major league career.

The 27-year-old started Game 1 of the World Series at second, going 1-for-2 with a walk in an 11-4 victory. He was pulled for a pinch runner in the sixth inning and did not start in Game 2’s 5-1 loss.

Bichette did end up appearing in Game 2 as a pinch hitter in the seventh inning. He didn’t have a hit in his lone at-bat and played the final two innings at second base.

“Just kind of gauging how he’s feeling,” Schneider said before Game 2. ”He’ll be ready to play today, for sure. This is stuff we talked about, even leading up to the decision to put him on the roster. I thought he was good yesterday and just want to watch him physically, but he’ll be ready to hit and play whenever.”

Bichette’s status has been a big storyline throughout the playoffs as he was left off both the ALDS and ALCS rosters while recovering from a PCL injury in his right knee. Prior to Game 1 of the World Series, he had been out of the lineup since Sept. 6.

With Andreas Gimenez producing good results at short stop and George Springer playing great as Toronto’s designated hitter, Schneider elected to gamble and play Bichette at second base, a position he played once in 2019 with Triple-A Buffalo.

It paid off for Scheider as Bichette had some key defensive plays in Game 1.

Getting Bichette’s bat back in the lineup is big for the Blue Jays. In 139 regular season games, he hit 18 home runs and 94 RBIs while his .311 average was second in the majors behind Yankees star Aaron Judge.
