Breeders' Cup Odds Favor Zenyatta

If you’re planning to be in Kentucky this weekend, you may want to stop by Churchill Downs where six races are scheduled to go down on Friday, Nov. 5 and eight races on Saturday, Nov. 6 and will include a stellar lineup of 172 horses slated to run in the 2010 Breeders’ Cup World Championships. The competition will be fierce, as a whopping $25.5 million in purses is up for grabs.

With just two days to go until the Breeders’ Cup, the horse getting all the attention is Zenyatta, who is the 2/1 odds-on favorite in Sports Interaction’s Breeders’ Cup odds to win the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic. Running from post position eight, Zenyatta hopes to retire with a perfect 20-0 career by winning the 1 1/4-mile race against 11 younger horses.

The six-year-old undefeated mare, who tops all entrants with $6,404,580 in earnings, is vying to defend her Breeders’ Cup Classic championship, with trainer John Shirreffs and jockey Mike Smith optimistic that Zenyatta can do just that.

“She just loves all this,” Shirreffs told the L.A. Times. “She has developed a great personality. She looks for it [the attention] now.”

Zenyatta will be hoping to secure her third Breeders’ Cup victory, as no other horse has ever won three Breeders’ Cup races.

Trailing Zenyatta with 9/2 odds is Lookin at Lucky, who will run from the outside post. Other top contenders include Blame, who is 3 for 4 on the dirt at Churchill and will be running from the fifth post position with 5/1 odds, as well as Haynesfield from post position three at 10/1, and Quality Road who will run from the inside post with 15/1 odds.

Longshot pick: With 16/1 odds, Fly Down is an attractive longshot pick. He’s been training well at Saratoga and earned a maiden race win at Churchill Downs. And, with experienced Churchill Downs jockey Julien Leparoux aboard after a jockey change, Fly Down‘s chances just became a whole lot better.
