2020 Kentucky Derby: Predictions and Betting Odds
This year’s Triple Crown season has been unlike any other in its history. The first jewel of the Crown, the Kentucky Derby, was postponed from the first Saturday in May, making it the second jewel. The Belmont Stakes became the first of the three races and was run on June 20th. The Preakness will be run on October 3rd.
All eyes will be on Belmont Stakes winner Tiz the Law, who is currently priced as a heavy favorite to win at the Derby this weekend. Tiz the Law also won on August 8th at the Travers Stakes.
Let’s take a closer look at some of the ponies competing in the 1-1/4 mile “Run for the Roses” this weekend at Churchill Downs in Kentucky.

Here’s the full field of horses and their jockeys, numbered by post position.
1. Finnick The Fierce +3400
Currently priced at around 34/1 odds, Finnick the Fierce is a son of 2011 Derby favorite Dialed In, out of the Southern Image mare Southern Classic. Finnick is a fan favourite, having made it to horse racing’s premiere event after having lost his right eye when he was very young. His jockey is Martin Garcia and his trainer is Rey Hernandez.
2. Max Player +2000
A son of champion Honor Code, out of a mare by Not For Love, who was the broodmare sire of 2014 Kentucky Derby winner California Chrome. Max Player is priced at 20/1 odds to win. Max Player is trained by Steve Asmussen and is ridden by Ricardo Santana Jr.
3. Enforceable +2600
As of this writing, Enforceable is priced at 26-1 odds. He’s a son of three-time leading sire Tapit, out of the Dixie Union mare Justwhistledixie. Sons of Tapit have done well at the Belmont, but have yet to win in their last ten attempts at the Derby. Enforceable’s jockey is Adam Beschizza and he’s trained by Mark Casse.
4. Storm The Court +2500
Priced with 25-1 odds, Storm The Court is a son of 2011 Breeders’ Cup Mile winner Court Vision. Storm the Court made headlines when he posted the biggest upset in Breeders’ Cup Juvenile history, winning the race with 45-1 odds. His jockey is Flavien Prat and he’s trained by Peter Eurton.
5. Major Fed 50-1
Major Fed is the son of Ghostzapper produced by the Smart Strike mare Bobby’s Babe. Major Fed jockey is James Graham and his trainer is Greg Foley.
6. King Guillermo +2100
Priced at 21-1 odds, King Guillermo is a son of Uncle Mo, who sired 2016 Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist. His dam is the Dixieland Band mare Slow Sand. The winner of the Tampa Bay Derby, King Guillermo’s jockey is Samy Camacho and his trainer is Juan Carlos Avila.
7. Money Moves 30-1
Money Moves will be ridden by Javier Castellano and his trainer is Todd Pletcher. Pletcher has won the Kentucky Derby with horses Super Saver and Always Dreaming.
8. South Bend 50-1
South Bend is trained by Bill Mott, who earned his first Derby victory last year with Country House, who won because of a disqualification. South Bend is a son of Algorithms and Sandra’s Rose.
9. Mr. Big News 50-1
A son of Giant’s Causeway, Mr. Big News was another late entry to this year’s Derby. He’ll be ridden by Gabriel Saez and is trained by Bret Calhoun.
10. Thousand Words +1400
Currently priced with 14-1 odds, Thousand Words will be ridden by Florent Geroux and is trained by 6-time Derby winner Bob Baffert. Thousand Words is a son of Pioneerof the Nile and Pomeroys Pistol. He’s the recent winner at Los Alamitos.
11. Necker Island 50-1
A son of Hard Spun and Jenny’s Rocket, Necker Island’s jockey is Miguel Mana and his trainer is Chris Hartman.
12. Sole Volante +3200
Sole Volante’s current odds stand at 32-1. A son of Breeders’ Cup Mile winner Karakontie and Light Blow, he’ll be ridden by Luca Panici. His trainer is Patrick Biancone and recently won the Sam F. Davis (G3) at Tampa Bay Downs.
13. Attachment Rate +4100
Currently priced with 41-1 odds, Attachment Rate is a son of 2007 Derby runner-up Hard Spun, out of a mare by 2005 Preakness and Belmont Stakes winner Afleet Alex. Trained by Dale Romans, Attachment Rate will be ridden by Joe Talamo.
14. Winning Impression 50-1
A son of Haskell winner Paynter and Unbridled Sonya, Winning Impression will be ridden by Joe Rocco Jr. and is trained by Dallas Stewart.
15. NY Traffic +1900
NY Traffic currently sits at 19-1 odds to win the Kentucky Derby. A son of Cross Traffic and Mamie Reilly, NY Traffic is ridden by Paco Lopez and trained by Saffie Joseph Jr.
16. Honor A.P. 5-1
As of this writing, this pony has the second best odds to win this race. Winner of the $400,000 Santa Anita Derby, Honor A.P is ridden by Mike Smith and trained by John Shirreffs. He is a son of Honor Code and Hollywood Story.
17. Tiz The Law -181
The odds favourite, Tiz The Law drew the 17th post position for the Derby; a spot that no horse has ever won from. Ridden by Manny Franco and trained by Barclay Tagg, Tiz The Law is the son of Constitution and Tizfiz. He most recently was the winner of the 2020 Belmont Stakes and Travers Stakes.
18. Authentic +900
Authentic sits at 9-1 odds to win. Another trainee of Bob Baffert, Authentic is a son of Into Mischief and Flawless. He recently won the $100,000 Sham(G3) on January 4th at Santa Anita Park.
2020 Kentucky Derby Prediction
It’s hard to bet against heavily favoured Tiz The Law in this one. Authentic could very well surprise everyone, however, giving Bob Baffert another victory.
