2022 LIV Golf Invitational Bedminster: Golf Odds, Prediction

It appears the controversial Saudi-backed LIV Golf series is here to stay, and in fact this weekend’s event from New Jersey probably has a better field than the PGA Tour’s Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit does. Former world No. 1 Dustin Johnson is the favourite to win on the LIV golf odds.

Just a reminder that LIV events have only a 48-man field (Friday-Sunday) with no cut. There’s also a team component – the 12 captains will draft Wednesday. With Greg Norman adding more players by the tournament, that means no room for some lower-level guys who might have played in the first two events. The latest big name to join is Sweden’s Henrik Stenson, who was supposed to captain the European 2023 Ryder Cup team but now will not.

“Unfortunately my decision to play in LIV events has triggered Ryder Cup Europe to communicate that it is not possible for me to continue in my role as Ryder Cup captain,” said Stenson. “This is despite me making specific arrangements with LIV Golf, who have been supportive of my role as captain, to ensure I could fulfil the obligations of the captaincy.”

The first LIV tournament was in London last month and won by South African Charl Schwartzel. The second was played early this month in the Pacific Northwest (Portland area) and won by South African Branden Grace. Noticing a trend here?

Trump National Golf Club Bedminster is the host course. As former US President Donald Trump summers in that area, he’ll no doubt be on hand for at least one day of the event. The course is a par 72 at about 7,600 yards. It hosted the 2017 US Women’s Open. It was to host this year’s PGA Championship but was stripped of the privilege by the PGA of America shortly after the Trump-fuelled riot at the US Capitol in January 2021 as Congress was certifying the election victory of President-elect Joe Biden.

David Feherty, one of the most influential and recognized voices in golf, will make his debut as an analyst for this week’s tournament. LIV is also talking with Charles Barkley. You can stream live coverage of LIV tournaments on LIVGolf.com, YouTube and Facebook.

Johnson is the +550 favourite and he finished fourth in this most recent LIV event, four shots behind the winner, Grace. Johnson’s team did win that portion of the tournament.

Abraham Ancer is +1100 with Louis Oosthuizen, Taylor Gooch and Bryson DeChambeau all +1200. Ancer was 11th in the last LIV event, Oosthuizen fifth, Gooch seventh and DeChambeau 10th.

There are no Canadians on the LIV series yet.

LIV Golf Invitational Bedminster Golf Prediction

We’ll take Johnson even at such a short price. He’s clearly the best player in the field and has two Top 10s in two LIV events plus a T6 at the recent British Open.
