Calgary Stampeders at Toronto Argonauts: Grey Cup Game Results and Score
The Toronto Argos won the 100th Grey Cup Sunday, downing Calgary 35-22.
The Toronto Argonauts have had their sights set on playing in the CFL’s 100th Grey Cup game in front of their home fans for a long time. On Sunday, they’ll host the Calgary Stampeders on Sunday as they look for their first Grey Cup victory at home since 1952. The Argos lost the 1982 title game at home against the Edmonton Eskimos.
Ray of Hope
The Argos were solid underdogs in Montreal last weekend in the Eastern Conference final, but quarterback Ricky Ray came up with a huge effort. He completed 28 of his 37 passing attempts for 399 yards and a touchdown. “It’s been seven years,” Ray told reporters about his long wait to get back to the CFL title game. “It’s just a great feeling to have a chance to play the 100th Grey Cup game at home, though. Just a great feeling.”
Most Outstanding Player
Chad Owens also played a huge part in Toronto’s win, piling up 207 receiving yards and 346 total yards against Montreal. Owens is a finalist for the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player award against Calgary running back Jon Cornish. The Stampeders’ workhorse rumbled for 112 yards on 18 carries against B.C.’s tough defence last weekend, helping Calgary beat the Lions 34-29 at BC Place. “I knew we would play Toronto,” Cornish told reporters. “It’s a great team. They have made the right things happen. Playing against Toronto in Toronto, it definitely feels a lot like 2008. It’s great for the CFL that (the Argonauts) are in the Grey Cup. It’s great for the Stampeders that we’re in the Grey Cup, as well.”
Dealing with Distractions
Grey Cup week is known as one of the biggest parties of the year in the country and that fact isn’t lost on either team. The Stampeders are trying to deal with it as more of a business trip with more appointments on the schedule than usual. “The biggest message was that it’s going to be a hectic week for guys who haven’t been through this before,” Stamps quarterback Kevin Glenn told the Calgary Herald. “There will be a lot of demands with media, different appearances, the practices will be different from what we’re used to. It’s not a regular-season week, it’s a Grey Cup week, and I think the guys understand it.”
Prediction
This matchup is a great example of how important momentum is in the CFL. The Stamps and the Argos were the two hottest teams coming into the postseason and now battle it out for the Grey Cup. Sports Interaction has Calgary as a 2.5-point favourite, but it’s hard not to like the home team with the playmakers on Toronto’s offence. Final score prediction: Toronto 33, Calgary 27.
