Ottawa RedBlacks May Sign QB McLeod Bethel-Thompson
All the hope and optimism surrounding Jeremiah Masoli’s return to the starting lineup in Week 5 evaporated in the second quarter against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. He left the game with a lower body injury and was seen walking with crutches.
Now, it’s being reported that the RedBlacks have called former player McLeod Bethel-Thompson to see if he’d like to come back to the CFL.

RedBlacks Call QB McLeod Bethel-Thompson
It’s not as though Bethel-Thompson can’t rip it. He played five seasons with the Toronto Argonauts and helped the club win two Grey Cups in that time span, including last year. Incidentally, he suffered a thumb injury in the fourth quarter of the championship game, which was what put the spotlight on current Argos QB Chad Kelly.
In the offseason Bethel-Thompson opted to head back to the United States and play for the USFL’s New Orleans Breakers.
A return to the CFL would be complicated for a few reasons. First, his return to American football had a lot to do with being closer to his family. Second, it’s being said that some NFL teams are looking at the 35-year-old quarterback, in particular those who could use a third stringer to complete their rosters.
All the same, should a deal be arrived at between him and the Ottawa RedBlacks, the latter would have a heck of an insurance policy while Masoli once again nurses his injuries. The club is expected to provide a status update on Tuesday, July 11.
Jeremiah Masoli arrived in Ottawa during the 2022 offseason with much fanfare. Unfortunately, his and the RedBlacks’ season was derailed when the quarterback broke a leg in Week 5. The team finished 4-14 and missed the playoffs.
