Odds and Bets: Las Vegas Aces Look for Trump Card Against New York Liberty

New York Liberty vs Las Vegas Aces

The New York Liberty (24-6) and Las Vegas Aces (27-3) do battle once more on Thursday night, this time in WNBA regular season play. It’s a matchup that intrigues for multiple reasons despite that both have already clinched playoff berths.

For one, the top seed in the playoffs is still technically up for grabs even though New York has very little time to catch up to its closest competitor. Second, and this is the kicker, the Liberty have played exceptionally well against the Aces this season. A couple of weeks ago they hammered the league-leaders at home 99-61. On Tuesday night in the Commissioner’s Cup final in Nevada, they obliterated the Aces again 82-63. If Vegas can’t overcome New York, they won’t repeat as WNBA champs. This is an opportunity to send a message. Time for A’Ja Wilson, Jackie Young, and Kelsey Plum to shine.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers vs Calgary Stampeders

Winnipeg Blue Bombers @ Calgary Stampeders (Friday, Aug 18 2023 9:00pm)

Pointspread
  • Winnipeg Blue Bombers -115 -5
  • Calgary Stampeders -105 +5

Friday night in the CFL has the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (7-2) visit the Calgary Stampeders (3-6). This is a trap game for Winnipeg, who blasted BC at home two weeks ago and benefited from the Elks just being themselves in Edmonton last week. Calgary is an infuriating team for many reasons, namely that 3-6 could just as easily be 6-3 were it not for some heartbreaking losses.

Blue Bombers fans are holding their breath about the status of QB Zach Collaros. He injured his neck last week in Edmonton and missed practice on Monday. As of Wednesday morning, the team remains mum on his health. Backup Dru Brown was excellent as a replacement, but the opponent was the Elks. Then again, the Stampeders are seventh in points conceded on the year. It isn’t as though Brown, should he play, would be up against a staunch defence.

Best Bet: Stampeders with the spread

Milwaukee Brewers vs Los Angeles Dodgers

Milwaukee @ Los Angeles (Wednesday, Aug 16 2023 10:10pm)

Runline
  • Los Angeles: C Kershaw -116 -1
  • Milwaukee: W Miley -104 +1

Two division leaders continue their series in California when the Milwaukee Brewers (65-55) and Los Angeles Dodgers (72-46) play the middle match of their three-game set. L.A. took the first round 6-2, making it nine wins in a row.

Milwaukee sends Wade Miley (6-2, 2.90 ERA) to the mound and Los Angeles goes with old faithful, Clayton Kershaw (10-4, 2.51 ERA). Of the two clubs, the Brewers need this one more. The Dodgers hold a comfortable nine-game lead over the Giants in the NL West, whereas the Brewers are only three and a half up on the Cubs. Unsurprisingly, the problem is facing Kershaw. Miley is having a good season. If he can keep Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman quiet, Milwaukee has a chance.

Best Bet: Milwaukee on the moneyline
