MLB: Boston Red Sox at Houston Astros

Today we discuss a weekend series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Boston Red Sox, the Redblacks and Elks in the CFL, the the Sparks vs Dream in the WNBA.

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Boston Red Sox

Los Angeles @ Boston (Friday, Aug 25 2023 7:10pm)

  • Boston: K Crawford -155 +1
  • Los Angeles: L Lynn +129 -1

On Friday evening the Los Angeles Dodgers (78-48) and Boston Red Sox (68-60) commence a weekend series at Fenway Park. As the summer evolved the Dodgers reverted to their former selves, winning a lot and once again taking command of the NL West. They’ve won four of five and, up until recently, rode an 11-game winning streak.

Regarding Boston, as discussed in the MLB Power Rankings from last week, they refuse to go down quietly. At 3.5 games out of a Wild Card spot, making the playoffs is realistic, but they need to perform an extra push – hammering the Houston Astros 17-1 helps. On Friday, L.A. hands to ball to Lance Lynn (9-9, 5.60 ERA) whereas Boston puts its faith in Kutter Crawford (6-6, 3.66 ERA). Mookie Betts has had an incredible week so far and it will be interesting to see if he can keep that up against Crawford, who keeps his WHIP fairly low (1.09)

Best Bet: Boston Red Sox on the moneyline

Ottawa Redblacks vs. Edmonton Elks

Ottawa Redblacks @ Edmonton Elks (Sunday, Aug 27 2023 7:00pm)

  • Ottawa Redblacks -110 +1
  • Edmonton Elks -110 -1

There was a lot of buzz in the CFL a week ago when the Edmonton Elks (1-9) came off their first win of the campaign by defeating the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 24-10. They and the Ottawa Redblacks (3-7) conclude Week 12 in Edmonton. Therein lies the kicker. Now that the Elks have gotten the overall winless monkey off their back, can they finally do away with that disastrous home loss streak?

It won’t be easy. First, Edmonton is a very good team. Second, while the Elks’ defence showed up in Hamilton, Taylor Powell is not the most difficult QB to shut down. Dustin Crum is another matter altogether. Maybe less so for his throwing prowess, but he burns teams a lot with his legs. Tre Ford is now the starting QB in Edmonton. Throwing for 181 yards a game won’t destroy any records, but his completion percentage is solid (73.5) and there seems to be a greater sense of flow to the attack now. For this game, we’ll play things differently and look at the over-under of 45.5. Both teams have pretty lousy defences.

Best Bet: Take the over 45.5

Los Angeles Sparks vs. Atlanta Dream

Los Angeles Sparks @ Atlanta Dream (Friday, Aug 25 2023 8:00pm)

  • Los Angeles Sparks -110 -1
  • Atlanta Dream -110 +1

Don’t look now, but the Los Angeles Sparks (14-18) are in eighth place in the WNBA standings, which is good enough to hold onto the final playoff spot. The Chicago Fire has started to dim as they sit two games back. On Friday night the Sparks are in Atlanta to face the Dream (16-17), currently in sixth. There aren’t many games left on the schedule but opportunity beckons for either L.A. to sneak up on Atlanta and Washington or for Atlanta to solidify its place and maybe even get to fourth.

Things have been rough for the Dream lately, having lost four of five, albeit twice to the Aces. Another came against these same Sparks, 85-74. Atlanta guard Allisha Gray is listed day-to-day at the time of writing. The Sparks enter with a five-game winning streak under their belt. This is a big chance for L.A., who despite being hampered by injuries, can still count on Nneka Ogwumike (19.3 points per game).

Best Bet: Los Angeles Sparks on the with the spread
