Blue Bombers’ QB Zach Collaros Exits Game Against Elks

The 2023 CFL season from hell for quarterbacks continued on Thursday night. In the second quarter of Winnipeg’s game away to the Edmonton Elks, Blue Bombers star Zach Collaros was flattened on a broken play. It resulted in an upper-body injury serious enough to keep him out of the remainder of the contest.

Blue Bombers’ QB Zach Collaros Suffer Upper-Body Injury

It was a wild night for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Against the league-worst Edmonton Elks, they fell behind 14-0 in the first quarter. The hosts were visibly determined to halt their unparalleled streak of futility at Commonwealth Stadium.

Things got even more worrisome in the second period. As Zach Collaros scrambled outside his pocket to avoid pressure, he eventually threw an errant pass while falling to the ground. Edmonton’s Loucheiz Purifoy caught the throw and returned it for a TD, worsening Winnipeg’s hole to 22-0. That was problem number one.

Problem number two came on the same play. With Collaros down, in the spur of the moment, Elks lineman Kony Ealy fell onto the QB. There was no ill intent on the part of the culprit, but it left Collaros worse for wear and forced him to leave the contest.

Ironically, the Blue Bombers stormed all the way back from the 22-0 deficit to earn a 38-29 victory. Backup QB Dru Brown filled in, throwing 17-for-24 for 307 yards, four scores, and no interceptions.

As of Friday afternoon, there is no status update on Collaros’ health.
