Calgary Stampeders at Saskatchewan Roughriders

It’s a battle of the top two teams in the West Division standings on Friday night with 4-0 Saskatchewan hosting 3-1 Calgary. This game should come down to a battle between the Stampeders’ ground attack versus the Roughriders’ defence.

Dedrick Mills has been electric for Calgary with a league-leading five rushing TDs while ranking second in total rushing yards (311). A lot of that success comes from an elite offensive line that was a big reason for Mills’ 93-yard rushing performance against Winnipeg last week.

On the flip side, you have a Riders defence that is allowing a league-low 66.5 rushing yards per game, almost 40 yards better than the league average. Saskatchewan also has the league’s leading rusher in A.J. Ouellette (347 total rushing yards), who will face a Calgary defence that struggles to stop the run.

Both these teams have outperformed expectations early in the season, but the Roughriders are the only undefeated team for a reason. Saskatchewan has no major weak spots, while the Stamps have vulnerabilities that can be exploited on both sides of the ball.

Pick: Saskatchewan -4.5

Ottawa RedBlacks at Hamilton Tiger-Cats

After a slow start to the season the Ti-Cats have posted back-to-back victories and they’ll look to make it three in a row when they host an Ottawa squad with the worst record in the CFL.

The biggest difference for Hamilton over the last two weeks has been their offensive explosion. The Tiger-Cats have put up 86 points over the last two games, including 51 last week in Toronto.

That’s a recipe for disaster for the RedBlacks, who are giving up 30 points per game. Morale has to be even lower for Ottawa’s defence, which was torched for 39 points by a below average Edmonton offence last week.

Hamilton seems to have found their groove and I expect that to continue in Week 6. I think the Ti-Cats will come close to hitting the game total by themselves, so the Over is a no-brainer this week.

Pick: Hamilton -4.5, Over 54.5

BC Lions at Edmonton Elks

While Edmonton and BC sit at the bottom of the West Division standings, both teams will be riding high after Week 5 victories.

It’s been tough to judge the Lions’ offence with Nathan Rourke missing multiple weeks with an oblique injury, but the Canadian quarterback looked great in is return last week. James Butler, who is third in the CFL with 303 rushing yards, has also made this a dangerous two-way offence.

One issue offensively for Edmonton is the passing attack, which averages the least amount of passing yards per game (218.8) this season. A bigger issue, however, could be on the other side of the ball as the Elks are allowing a league-worst 34.5 points per game.

Edmonton is getting torched through the air, giving up 323.8 passing yards per game, while the next closest team only allows just over 279 passing yards per game. That’s spells trouble against a quarterback like Nathan Rourke.

Pick: B.C. -2.5
