The Islanders played the first-ever playoff game in their home barn, the UBS Arena in Game 3 and delivered a 5-1 beatdown on the Hurricanes taking their first win of the series.
After a scoreless first period, the Isles and Canes were deadlocked 1-1 heading into the third. It would stay tied until there were only four minutes left in the game before an Islanders powerplay opened the floodgates. The Islanders would then pour on a total of four goals in just a 2:18 span, setting an NHL Playoff record for the fastest four goals.

Although it was tagged as a defensive matchup, a high-scoring third period in Game 3 helped it play the Over for the second game in a row. They have now played the Over in four of the past seven meetings.
The Islanders’ win on Friday snapped a five-game losing streak against Carolina. They have covered in four straight meetings with the Canes, including each of the three games in this series.
Carolina Hurricanes
Hurricanes goalie Antti Raanta had his busiest game of the series on Friday, facing over 30 shots for the first time. He has horrible stats as the road goalie in the postseason, dropping his record to 0-7 with a 3.78 goals-against average and a .874 save percentage over his career. Frederik Andersen has been battling an illness since the series began, but could start game four if he is healthy again.
Jesper Fast scored the lone goal for Carolina in Game 3 giving home goals in back-to-back games. He took five of the team’s 31 shots on goal as the offence struggled to get into a rhythm.
After scoring powerplay goals in Games 1 and 2, the unit was held off the board in Game 3. The special teams did convert when Jesper Fast notched a short-handed goal, but they have failed to score at five-on-five in two of the three games in this series.
New York Islanders
For the first time in the series, it was the Islanders who opened the scoring on a goal from Casey Cizikas with less than eight minutes left in the second period. They would take a 1-1 tie into the third period before the New York powerplay would finally find the back of the net after going 0 for 6 coming before Kyle Palmieri’s (2nd) deflection goal.
The powerplay marker would open the floodgates as Matt Martin would score 44 seconds later, followed by Scott Mayfield and Anders Lee, who would put them ahead 5-1.
For the first time this postseason, the Isle’s outshot the Hurricanes and put them back on their heels. They were outshot by 10 or more in each of the first two games, but having a goalie like Ilya Sorokin in their net has kept them in the series.
