National Bank men’s field missing top stars

The men’s field from Toronto is missing world No. 1 Jannik Sinner of Italy (2023 event winner), No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz of Spain, No. 5 Jack Draper of Great Britain and No. 6 Novak Djokovic (four-time winner) of Serbia all in part because of the crammed hardcourt season right after Wimbledon and leading to the final Grand Slam event of the year, the U.S. Open.

Either Sinner or Alcaraz has won the past seven Grand Slams on Tour, and Djokovic is the men’s all-time Slam leader with 24 titles. It didn’t help this year that the National Bank Open expanded from one week to 12 days of competition. There’s another major hardcourt event up next in the Cincinnati Open and the U.S. Open is a week after that – and there are only so many tournaments guys can play before wearing down.

Thus, the betting favourites entering this year are world No. 3 Alexander Zverev (+550) of Germany, the 2017 champion, and No. 4 Taylor Fritz (+650) of the USA. They so happen to be the seeds and thus could only meet in the Aug. 7 final.

The defending champion is Aussie Alexei Popyrin as he beat Russia’s Andrey Rublev in straight sets in the final. Popyrin is seeded 18th this year but hasn’t won a singles title in 2025 with a 12-15 record and on Tuesday in Round 2 faces Canada’s Nicolas Arseneault, who is ranked No. 638 in the world.

The 18-year-old wild-card entry in his first main draw on the ATP Tour upset 24-year-old qualifier Valentin Royer of France 6-3, 7-6 (4) to advance. Arseneault in the same quarter of the draw with top-seeded Zverev.

The seeded Canadian men in the field are No. 21 Félix Auger-Aliassime, No. 22 Denis Shapovalov and No. 27 Gabriel Diallo – they all play Tuesday in Round 2 as well. The last Canadian man to make the final of this event was Milos Raonic in 2013 losing to Rafael Nadal.

Leylah Fernandez in action Tuesday

The last Canadian women’s winner of the National Bank Open was Bianca Andreescu in 2019 and there are no seeded females from Canada this year. She is into Round 2 on Tuesday but a sizable underdog against No. 4 seed Mirra Andreeva. Two other unseeded Canadians are sizable underdogs Tuesday: Victoria Mboko vs. No. 22 Sofia Kenin, and Rebecca Marino vs. No. 8 Emma Navarro.

The highest-ranked Canadian in the world is No. 22 Leylah Fernandez, who was born in Montreal, but she’s not seeded. Fernandez just won a title in Washington, D.C., and opens play in this event Tuesday vs. Maya Joint.

Unfortunately, the women’s field from Montreal was hit a few major losses as well led by world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka and No. 10 Paula Badosa sitting out. Sabalenka has played 56 matches this year, more than any other player in the Top 50, including runs to the Australian Open and French Open finals and the Wimbledon semifinals. Sabalenka (not clear on the injured Badosa) will be back for Cincinnati.

Rather interestingly, two-time defending champion Jessica Pegula didn’t open as the tournament favourite but down at +2200. Two years ago, Pegula routed Liudmila Samsonova in losing just one game and then last year beat follow American Amanda Anisimova in three sets. Pegula’s first match this year is Tuesday. The last woman to threepeat in the event was Monica Seles in 1997.

Fellow American Coco Gauff is the No. 1 seed and opened as the +650 second-favourite behind No. 2 Iga Swiatek (+250) of Poland. Gauff won this year’s French Open and then Switek took Wimbledon but neither has won this tournament. They would only meet in the Aug. 7 final and both open play Tuesday.

National Bank Open Bets

Aussie Alex De Minaur for men – he opened +900 to win the event and is a good hardcourt player who was the 2023 runner-up — and American Coco Gauff for women.
