Sweden vs. Australia Prediction: Women’s World Cup Betting Odds
Two teams who played fantastically in this tournament will have to console themselves with a battle for third place. The match will take place in at Lang Park in Brisbane and will air for North American viewers at 4am ET on Saturday, August 19th, with the Final between England and Spain taking place the next day.
Sweden vs. Australia Third Place Playoff Odds
Sweden are once again in the position of having to play for third place in a Women’s World Cup tournament. This will be the fourth time they’ll be playing for the number three spot, and they’re good at it, having won all their previous three appearances; a 4-0 v. win over Germany in 1991, a 2-1 victory over France in 2011 and 2-1 win over England in 2019.
As for their history with the Matildas, they have nine wins, four draws and two losses from 15 previous matchups, which is another reason for them to be favoured on the odds board.
Sweden
This is a team that looked like they were poised to break the bronze curse as this year’s World Cup tournament got underway. They dominated in the group stage, only allowing a single goal throughout that stage, in a 2-1 victory over South Africa. They handily beat Italy to the tune of 5-0 and shut out Argentina 2-0.
However, it was in the Round of 16 that they really showed the world that they were a team to be reckoned with. The daunting task of playing the USWNT has historically gone the way of the Americans, but the Swedes were a defensive wonder on the field, and kept the score to 0-0 in regulation time before forcing the game into a shootout – which they went on to win in very dramatic fashion by a goal that counted thanks to a few millimetres.
But once again, the semi-finals were just not meant to go the Swedes’ way, and they had to endure a 2-1 loss to upstart Spain after Olga Carmona put in a last-minute winning goal.
Australia
What a ride for the Matildas. This team had to battle themselves away from the brink of elimination in the group stage, but the host nation have given their country a dramatic journey to watch, making it to the semi-finals for the first time ever and likely inspiring an entire new generation of Aussie football fans in the process.
They had to endure a penalty shootout against France in the quarterfinals in order to make it to the semifinals, where’d they have to play a familiar foe – the Brits. Fortunately, they had a star player back in the lineup.
Sam Kerr, although nursing a nagging injury, was deemed fit to play in the semi, and play she did, scoring an incredible goal in the 63rd minute of the match. Sadly, it would be the only goal scored by the Australian side, and England would go on to win the match 3-1.
Sweden vs. Australia Score Prediction
